Food in Denmark

Danish cuisine is known for its simplicity, use of fresh ingredients, and emphasis on traditional flavours. It is heavily influenced by the country’s coastal location and agricultural heritage. Popular ingredients in Danish cuisine include potatoes, cabbage, seafood, pork, and dairy products. Some classic dishes include smørrebrød (an open-faced sandwich), frikadeller (meatballs), stegt flæsk med persillesovs (fried pork belly with parsley sauce), and æbleskiver (a type of round pancake).

Here is a classic recipe for one of the most popular Danish dishes, frikadeller:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • Butter, for frying

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Mix well.
  2. Add the flour to the mixture and continue to mix until well combined.
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
  4. When ready to cook, form the mixture into small meatballs.
  5. In a large frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  6. Add the meatballs to the pan and cook, turning occasionally, for 10-12 minutes or until browned and cooked through.
  7. Serve the frikadeller with boiled potatoes, lingonberry jam, and pickled red cabbage.
