In towns and villages across Austria, locals and tourists alike gather to witness the spectacle of the Krampuslauf, with participants parading through the streets, growling and snarling as they go.
While the Krampuslauf may seem like a frightening and macabre event, it is also a beloved part of Austria’s cultural heritage. The tradition is said to date back to pre-Christian times when people believed in spirits and demons that roamed the earth during the darkest days of winter. By dressing up as Krampus and parading through the streets, Austrians are believed to scare off these malevolent spirits and ensure a bountiful and prosperous new year.
In addition to the Krampuslauf, many towns and villages in Austria also hold Krampus markets, where visitors can purchase handmade masks, costumes, and other Krampus-themed souvenirs. The markets often feature traditional Austrian food and drink, as well as live music and performances.
While Krampusnacht may not be for the faint of heart, it is a unique and fascinating part of Austria’s Christmas traditions.
